Chapter Four: Richard
“What in God’s name have we done? Five years of research…for what? Just one girl?”
“Shhh, you might wake her up, boy…”
“To hell with that nonsense! I’ve spent my past five years away from my wife and child for this…this abomination!?”
I felt uneasy when I found myself in a room similar to the one I woke up in the other day. Luckily, there was nothing attached to me, and it was an ordinary, white bed, rather than a white table fit for dissection. The same feeling of nonexistence came back as I could not see my body under the white blanket, which I threw onto the floor quickly, to find myself in white clothes. A simple pair of white shorts and a white, buttoned shirt.
A door slid open to my side, revealing a man in a white coat. He informed, “You may take a shower any time you wish by pressing your hand against the door opposite from where I stand.” It took me a second to take in what he said, and before I could ask him any questions, the doors slid shut as he walked out.
What is a shower? Out of curiosity, I followed what the man instructed, immediately finding a bathroom. Of course, I didn’t know what it was at the time, so I simply trudged myself onto the white tile floor of the room. I glanced at the sink, compelled by its odd shape and structure.
Is this a shower? After an hour’s worth of investigation, I decided it was not a shower, seeing as all it did was release water whenever I turned the knobs attached to it.
I sighed, as I was ready to make my way out, until I caught at the corner of my eye a small, transparent room in the corner, opposite to the sink.
Is…this a shower? I entered into the room, feeling cramped as to how it could only fit me in there, and if someone else entered, I couldn’t even imagine how annoying that would have been. Next, I noticed a knob similar to the one on the sink. I began turning it counter-clockwise…
Icy water came pouring down in several streams from above, soaking me completely wet. I slipped out of panic against the wet flooring, landing flat on my back out of the shower. I kicked the door shut, as I began shivering like I never had before. It was more of shaking violently against the white-tile-floor than shivering, really. My teeth chattered as I struggled to get out of my damp shirt, immediately hurling it away from me. I found myself pulling down my shorts, only to find out I was wearing some white undergarments underneath, hiding the…oh, bloody damnit, my bleep. I hope it’s been made clear of now. I won’t repeat myself.
Any who, as my shivering lessened, I caught something at the corner of my eye. A head in the distance looked at me from afar, and I couldn’t help but get closer. It didn’t take long for me to realize a mirror stood before me, as a girl stood before me. She was awfully wet, and still shivering at that. She looked…amazing, and despite the fact she literally had the chest of a man, I found myself…falling for her.
I looked directly into her violet eyes, leaning closer and closer towards them, as she did to mine. Her forehead pressed against mine, and I began to breathe heavily. My eyes began to get teary, as she smiled at me. My lips pressed themselves against hers, like mother and father would when they thought I was asleep. A stone, cold feeling raced through my body, as I began to retreat from my reflection.
I was so confused at the time, and my tears came down more rapidly. I could see hints of a very faint red come across my pale, white cheeks. I tugged at my snow, white hair, releasing violent tantrums. My mirror image looked horrible, ashamed of what I’ve done. Disgusted by my actions, I punched the mirror, shattering it into several pieces. The momentum of my punch was too much to stop, as my knuckles began to embed itself into the wall behind where the mirror once stood. My hand felt no pain, and the wall began to crack, until I was able to take my fist back. I instinctively regressed myself into a corner, crying into my knees as the wall kept making several more cracks on its own, while the mirror lay in pieces on the ground.

Hours must have passed, as I had fallen asleep with a growling stomach and the strong need to just urinate, which I wasn’t comfortable with at the time. I woke up at the crushing sound of glass, immediately looking up to see a man in a white coat. It was the man who told me about the showers. He offered me his hand, to which I forced my head away from, resting against my knees.
He asked, “Did all this happen because you couldn’t use a shower?” I glared at him, surprised he actually flinched, something I could never achieve when I was younger. “Don’t fret Sub…actually, what’s your name? I’d rather call you that than deal with the formalities.” My eyes calmed down, as I began to analyze this man. He had brown hair, a brown goatee, appeared to be in his thirties, about six feet tall, maybe average weight, a little over at most. Judging by his voice, he had a British accent, just like me. Though, his was Cockney, but it was close enough. What caught my attention the most were his light-blue eyes, and possibly his gold wedding ring. I can’t remember, oddly.
I gave in, “Arthur.”
He chuckled, “Odd name for a girl, wouldn’t you say?”
“I’m not a girl. Especially since girls can’t like girls, and that definitely must mean I’m a boy.” He erupted in laughter, which I frowned at and began to look away from him again.
Still laughing, he apologized, “I’m sorry, I’m sorry, ha-ha. You’re just in for a surprise when I teach about some cultures views on that concept is all.” He let out a snicker, which boiled my blood even more.
I shouted, “If you think it’s so funny, then what’s your name!?”
“Easy, quiet down. I didn’t mean to pull your leg that hard.” He sighed, as he offered his hand once more. He smiled, “The name’s Richard. Glad to meet you Arthur.” Hesitantly, I grabbed onto his hand, as he helped me up. Of all the things I could have done, I instinctively crossed my arms across my chest, having nothing to hide. He began laughing again, as I tried not to cry. He cackled, “First lesson of the day. How to use the ordinary bathroom.”
